Lapidus' book is a great, broad overview of the history of Islamic societies. I've yet to read it in its entirety, due to the fact it's massive, but I've used quite a few sections for papers and for by:   Islamic History Books on the Ottoman Empire: The Ottoman Empire was one of the largest and most influential empires in world history.

Its reach extended to three continents and it survived for more than six centuries, but its history is too often colored by the memory of its bloody final throes on the battlefields of World War I. A HISTORY OF ISLAMIC SOCIETIES, THIRD EDITION This third edition of Ira M.

Lapidus’s classic A History of Islamic Societies has been substantially revised to incorporate the new scholarship and insights of the last twenty-five years. The book is a towering accomplishment, synthesizing vast amounts of scholarship and compressing it into generalizations without oversimplification.

Readers who have done some prior reading on the history of the Islamic civilization will find a treasure trove of insight here, particularly on the socio-economic history/5(9). Review of previous edition:'This book is a major undertaking and deserves to be saluted as an outstanding achievement. Professor Lapidus’ A History of Islamic Societies belongs to a rare breed of works.' Source: World Quarterly.

A History of Islamic Societies. Long considered a classic, A History of Islamic Societies is now that much more useful a reference for general readers and scholars alike. Widely praised for its balanced and comprehensive account, Ira Lapidus' work has been fully revised in its coverage of each country and region of the Muslim world through /5(8).
